5 ways to stay productive while travelling

How to stay productive while you're travelling

Seasoned PAs will know that work doesn’t stop just because you’re travelling with your boss. While you can’t always get everything done on the road, you can still maintain a decent level of productivity. Here are a few tips from The Muse for staying on top of everything remotely.

1 Spend a bit extra
If you really need to get stuff done while you’re travelling, it’s worth spending a bit more for a train or flight that offers more benefits, such as a shorter journey or on-board wifi. If you’re company is on a budget, put forward a business case to justify the extra cost (the most important being no loss of productivity) and recommend areas where you could make up the cost, such as booking a cheaper hotel room.

2 Look for longer layovers
If you can’t get the go-ahead to spend more on a faster journey, look for trips that feature longer layovers – as long as you can spare the time. Spending longer in the airport at the train station means you can have more access to the internet and your phone than you might be able to during the flight.

3 Pack wisely
When you know you’re going to be travelling, start planning early so you can pack the essentials – your phone, a laptop or tablet, extra batteries and enough data to cover your trip. Always think about the worst-case scenario so you don’t get caught out in an emergency with no charger or not enough minutes to call the office.

4 Rearrange your task list
If you’re working on a big project or you know you’re still going to have to sit in on a conference call, be sure to schedule your day accordingly. Taking a call in a busy train station is practically impossible and you can’t exactly type up a report if you’re driving.

5 Think ahead
If possible, do as much of your work ahead of your trip as possible. Get your reports done early, try to be ahead of schedule on your project, and make sure you don’t miss any deadlines while you’re travelling. Putting in a few extra hours ahead of your trip means you can relax, have a stress-free journey and maybe even slip in some sightseeing while you’re away.
