Our latest Work & Life interview with Kerry Ferguson, Executive Assistant at Child & Child was originally published in PA Life Club member pages in the Winter 2025 issue of the magazine. The interviews feature active members of the Club who share experiences about their role as an EA, and what they enjoys doing when not working…
Kerry’s journey to working at a prominent London law firm started thousands of miles away in South Africa, and we were keen to find out how that came about.
What brought you to the UK andΒ made you enter the executive support profession?
When South AfricaΒ rejoinedΒ the Commonwealth inΒ 1994, I took the opportunity to comeΒ to the UKΒ on a working holiday visaΒ andΒ never returned.Β Β Β
IΒ was a PA to the CFO from 2015 –Β 2018 and was then promoted toΒ Executive AssistantΒ supporting the CEO,Β CFOΒ andΒ Board of Directors due to my commitment andΒ hard work.Β
Have you worked in the legalΒ sector for long, andΒ what do you enjoy most about yourΒ work?
ItβsΒ beenΒ 19 years βΒ andΒ my role has evolved significantly, from working atΒ C-suite level in a large global law firm to now being part of a medium sized firm where I wear many hats. What I enjoy most about my job is theΒ independence I have andΒ strong supportΒ I receive from my bosses.Β
And what are the biggestΒ challenges of your role?
Being pushed out of my comfort zone, especially when it comes to HR-related issues.Β Β Navigating these areas can be complex, butΒ itβsΒ an opportunity for growth.Β
What are your main responsibilities? Do you also get involved in organising events?
My main responsibilitiesΒ includeΒ managingΒ multipleΒ diaries and meetings, arranging events, siteΒ visitsΒ andΒ travel,Β overseeing allΒ admin staff,Β handling HRΒ related matters and managing facilitiesβ¦the list goes on!Β
WhatβsΒ the best adviceΒ youβveΒ ever been given, and do you have a favourite quote?
In my first position atΒ a Law Firm, IΒ encounteredΒ a legal term IΒ didnβtΒ understand.Β Β I expressed my embarrassment to the Partner,Β heΒ said, βNever feel embarrassed to ask, we all learn something new every day,Β including myselfβ.Β
While IΒ usuallyΒ favourΒ βtreat others how you expect to be treatedβ,Β I wouldΒ chooseΒ βexpect the unexpected.βΒ Β ItβsΒ aΒ great reminder to stay adaptable in my role.Β
Do you have any recommendations for professionalΒ development: tips,Β booksΒ or courses?
I highly recommend βTheΒ CrodieΒ Filesβ podcast, hosted by Jodie Meers and Craig Brynson.Β Β They share invaluable insights and strategies that canΒ greatly enhanceΒ oneβsΒ professional development.Β
Interview with Kerry Ferguson -Who inspires you?
While IΒ donβtΒ have a specific individual who inspires me, my Christian faith profoundly influences my life.Β Β It provides me with strength, guidance, and a sense of purpose, encouraging me to be my best self and support others in my role.Β
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I absolutely love entertaining friends and family β hosting dinner parties or game nights.Β Β Β Β
