AI: Will it replace the EA role?
Technology and automation are constant evolutions within the EA role, but AI will not replace the EA role.
- It is most certainly true that technology and automation are constant evolutions within the EA role, and there is no denying that technology was once perceived (and still is in some respects) as a threat to, and/or a replacement of the Assistant role.
- What is clear is that the fundamental core requirement of relationship building in the EA role, has not changed.
- The course of the EA role has grown in recent years and what was once purely an administration role fuelled by relationship building, is now an essential (strategic) business role that is still fuelled by relationship building, commanding higher salaries than ever before.
- AI is clearly an asset to us all, and in some forms such as AI scheduling. However, I am confident that what it can’t replace are the fluctuating considerations that are fundamental to relationship building.
- It is far more likely, that the EA role will use AI as an Assistant to their role.

How to futureproof your role as an Assistant
A panel discussion lead by PA Life’s Editor Marja-Leena Toseland with expert guests:
- Sarah Howson, Strategic PA Recruitment and Strategic PA Network
- Jodie Mears, EA, Advisory Board of the PA Show and co-founder of The Crodie Files podcast
- Susanna Tait, Chief Executive, Tait Associates
Here’s a snapshot of some of the topics we will be discussing:
- Are Assistants facing their biggest challenges now with the fast accelerating use of new technology and tools such as AI, or is this just part of the forever changing nature of the role?
- How are Assistants managing the new requirements, often implemented at rapid pace?
- Are Assistants best suited to becoming masters of the new tools or are their core skills and super powers better suited to more strategic and people focused tasks?
- Remote working has brought with it the need for better technology. Can technology replace the need for Assistants altogether?
- In which areas should PAs and EAs focus their development as routine tasks fall for AI to perform?
- Are the skills and education requirements for a PA and EA role changing, and if, so how?
- Recruitment: are you noticing changes in the PA/EA job market?
- Is there more focus on skills, esp technical skills?
- Are the core competences of a great PA still as relevant as before i.e. organisation, communication, reliability, hard working etc.?
- More emphasis on candidates who can take on more strategic roles and be part of the wider management team/s?
- Is this being reflected in remuneration? Especially in attracting new talent to the role? And also in retention of experienced Assistants?
The KEY question – what should today’s Assistants do to ensure they protect their job, even when the role is evolving?
