Science-Museum-joins-isla

The Corporate Events Team at the Science Museum in South Kensington has announced it has become a member of independent events industry sustainability body isla. The membership builds on the work already being done by the organisation to achieve Net Zero Carbon by 2033. The Science Museum is the first unique venue to join isla.

As part of its membership, the Corporate Events team will utilise proseed by isla, the event industryโ€™s first universal best practice framework. This will help the Science Museum benchmark the performance of events across its venue operations and supply chain focusing on key areas including energy, food & water, travel & transport and production.

The events team at the museum will also benefit from event specific sustainability training and education carried out by islaโ€™s expert learning and delivery partners.

Science Museum joins isla with a commitment to achieving net zero by 2033

The Science Museum Group is committed to achieving Net Carbon Zero by 2033. The museumโ€™s carbon footprint was measured in 2019/20 to give a baseline year, which has informed the route to net zero by 2033. The plan is underpinned by science-based absolute emission carbon reduction targets that are consistent with the Paris agreement of limiting warming to 1.5ยฐC above pre-industrial levels.

There are five key sustainability objectives that will drive the museumโ€™s โ€˜Sustainability Action Planโ€™ across the Groupโ€™s five museums and National Collections Centre. These are: working towards a net zero target, empowering colleagues, inspiring visitors, reducing its carbon footprint, and becoming sustainability leaders.

Lyndsey Baron, Events Manager at the Science Museum, comments: โ€œWe recognise the incredible importance of operating sustainably as a venue and want to be at the forefront of sustainability in the unique venue sector, so weโ€™re delighted to be the first venue of our kind to join isla. Many of the suppliers and agents we regularly work with are already members and this collaborative approach is a big step towards making the events industry more sustainable and accountable going forward.โ€
