Restaurant Review: A journey through the streets of Asia UBA London

PA Life visited UBA London, a blend of east London’s dynamic spirit with the ‘exotic allure’ of Pan Asian flavours. We booked a Wednesday evening, a mid-week luxury to enjoy as we head into the dark winter months.

The restaurant is located, very appealingly just a 10 minute walk from London Liverpool Street, in the lively heart of Shoreditch. Upon entering, you are immediately captivated by the venue’s distinctive charm. Creating the perfect blend of playful, yet sophisticated. The deeply lit ambiance creates a luxurious feel. Circulated by red velvet banquettes, complimented by illustrative artwork and Asian ceramics.

UBA London is a lunch and dinner destination, its convivial vibe makes it the perfect balance for for casual or special occasions. Or even business meetings with the hotel accessible with a quiet space through the hallway. The attentive service made this experience feel private. The menu is contemporary Asian with an upscale modern twist. We began with two cocktails, The Mandarin Star and The Harmony, of which our server indicated this to be refreshing and light.

What was our meal at UBA like?

We decided to go for 2 starters, a main each and a dessert. With the starters around ยฃ8 each, and the mains at around ยฃ25, particularly considering the restaurantโ€™s refined atmosphere and high-end feel. I ordered the rock shrimp style tempura, seaweed furikake, kimchi garlic mayo. Shrimp is a trusted favourite of mine, and what better place is there to have tempura shrimp other than a Pan Asian? This was perfectly crispy, and the kimchi mayo gave it that perfect spicy twang. My mum ordered the Beef rib tacos with avocado and crispy onions, another perfectly crisp dish. We shared both dishes, which were both really light but so flavoursome.

After our tasty small dishes, we were excited for our mains. I had the imperial miso black cod paired with chilli lime yuzu sauce. This was incredibly buttery, dissolving effortlessly in my mouth with a melt-in-the-mouth richness. The chilli lime was the perfect citrusy combination that made this dish just perfect. My mum had the baby chicken, barley ginger miso, crispy rice noodle, coriander & sesame. This also was tangy and buttery, cooked to perfection.

Moving on to desserts, these were relatively big portions. I had the chocolate forest and my mum had the Crรจme Brule. The chocolate forest, literally looked like a chocolate forest! With a scoop for fresh red berry sorbet in the centre. With mini droplets of tree look alike, coated with chocolate twigs. The crรจme brule was incredibly creamy, and light, not too sweet. It was a delicious combination with lemon sorbet in the centre.
