PA Life visited the ‘OG’ of plant based dining, since its launch in 1988, Mildred’s in Covent Garden. We purposely booked a Thursday evening, to enjoy the buzz of the city on a ‘nearly the weekend night’. It was a perfect choice for catching up with a friend over Mildred’s new seasonal menu and cocktails that draw inspiration from all corners of the world…
The appeal of Mildred’s is their fantastic food and drink, loved by everyone. The menu just happens to be vegan. The warm and inviting vibe of the restaurant is a great bonus. It makes you feel connected to the story of the restaurant. You won’t even think about missing meat. It’s casual ambience is spot on for those looking for a bite to eat after work. The dรฉcor is cosy yet sleek, withย wood-panelled interiors and contemporary art adorning the room.
We were greeted with a very warm welcome by their restaurant manager, and their fantastic team who served us on the evening. Before thinking about food, we tried out their latest offer, the ‘Off The Rails’ cocktail menu! Starting with the Lima where Peruvian pisco meets passionfruit liqueur in a tropical twist.
The Taste of Mildred’s Menu
PA Life tried out the ‘Taste of Mildred’s’ menu, perfect for sharing. This showcases eight crowd-pleasing small plates. With this sharing menu, expect dishes like Sri Lankan Kiri Hodi with sweet potato and green bean pilau, Kimchi Gyoza with gochugaru sesame dip, Red Pepper Romesco, and Charred Aubergine Bharta. A personal favourite for us, was the Salsa Macha Hummus, this was a creamy chickpea dip with candied pine nuts & pumpkin seeds coated in a smoky mexican peanut chilli oil. This, with their thicklycut warm pitta bread was sensational.
The main event, was the Kiri Hodi, a Sri Lankan coconut curry, sweet potato & green bean pilau, cashew sev, cherry tomato chutney, pineapple pandan sambol, mint coriander chutney. It is a very large dish and menu to get through, so definitely arrive hungry. We were incredibly satiated afterwards, and the pathara this was paired with was perfectly crispy on the outer layer but soft inside.
All paired with the Off The Rails cocktail menu, this took us on a journey through Latin America โ from Mexico City to Lima โ with each stop taking inspiration from the vibrant city showcasing native ingredients. Mildred’s never play it safe, by changing their menus with each season, it is always a success. It seems their guests agree, having named Mildred’s to be Londonโs favourite vegan restaurant in 2023.
