Noah Ellis, Founder, Nomadic Dinners share his insights and experience in creating a more sustainable Christmas party.
At Nomadic Dinners we are always conscious of paying special attention to how we can protect our surroundings, without compromising on quality of experience, when we host our woodland guests for a unique feast over fire.
Below are six simple things that we believe will help your festive party be a bit more sustainable this year.
Location and Transport
When selecting a location, be sure to consider the proximity of the location for your guests and the mode of transport. We always recommend our guests share transportation where possible to limit the number of trips that are taken to and from the location.
Venue
If sustainability is important to your organisation; be sure to find a venue that shares the same ethos as you and consider nature as your backdrop rather than a nightclub or inner city bar this year. At Nomadic Dinners, we are finding that more and more corporate clients are choosing us due to sustainability being right at the heart of what we do. We find our careful attention to food miles, upcycling and using what we can from the woodlands is what many businesses are looking for. Our guests also always leave feeling restored by being out in nature (of course in winter there is a roaring fire, snuggly blankets and cover for rainfall).
Limiting the use of single use plastics
Many venues are working to limit the amount of single use plastics and swap these out for sustainable alternatives so it is worth checking with the venue you choose whether they have a policy on this prior to your booking. If you are working with an in house caterer why not ask them to provide a biodegradable alternative for disposable bowls and plates such as Wholeleafco, the brand we work with at Nomadic.
Limiting Food Miles
Part of our ethos at Nomadic is to provide seasonal and locally sourced ingredients on our menus, many of which we grow ourselves on our land. When considering a venue or caterer we recommend those that do the same. Not only is this better for the environment but we promise you food tastes a lot better when it is in season and comes from the surroundings.
Limiting Food Waste
Each year in the UK we throw away 9.5 million tons of food whilst food poverty and hunger is at a record high. If youโre working with a caterer, why not see if they can donate any of the excess food to a charity like The Trussell Trust.
Plant a Tree
At Nomadic we work with treeapp to plant a tree for each of our guests that visits us by making a small donation to offset any carbon emissions. You can also do this via National Trust or Woodland Trust.
Finally it is important to remember that even the smallest adjustments can make a difference. Try not to worry too much and just enjoy the occasion. If you have any questions weโre always on hand to offer advice at
