Hotel review: PA Life checked into Hotel Indigo York

Hotel-Indigo-York

PA Life enjoyed a lovely autumn visit to York and stayed at the charming boutique hotel, Hotel Indigo York, in the center of the city…

York is a vibrant and historic city to visit, whether for business or leisure. If you can, do plan to fit in plenty of time for the latter if you are planning a work trip to the city, as there is so much to explore. We were perfectly located at Hotel Indigo York, a boutique hotel in the historic district of Walmgate, perfectly placed for visiting The Shambles, York Minster and The York Chocolate Story. Plus you are not short of great cafes and restaurants in this pretty neighbourhood.

What are the bedrooms like at Hotel Indigo York

You’ll find chocolate featuring strongly in the city and the chocolate heritage is celebrated with award-winning interior design by Matthews Mee. The bedrooms have wall panels that resemble chocolate squares, lampshades made from antique jelly moulds and vibrant โ€˜Smartieโ€™ cushion covers for a uniquely chocolately stay. All that sweetness complement the exposed brick walls and loft style interior perfectly. I need to add that the super-King size bed was wonderfully comfortable and just the perfect firmness. The room was also very quiet which is good to know if you are a light sleeper.

The bathrooms are stylishly contemporary, yet comfortably homely too, a refreshing change from some of the standard hotel bathrooms larger chains favour at the moment.

Breakfast is served

We enjoyed a testy cooked breakfast from the ala-carte breakfast menu. My scrambled eggs with smoked salmon served with toasted sourdough were just what I wanted. There is also a substantial choice of pastries, cereals and fruit from the buffet. Everything you would want really.

The hotel restaurant doesn’t serve dinner, so all the more reason to explore York and its many independent restaurants.

The friendly staff deserve a mention too. Yorkshire is well known for its hospitability, and we certainly felt very welcome at the hotel and the city.

Immersive Christmas experiences return to Hotel Indigo York

Hotel Indigo York is set to welcome guests to its immersive festive-themed room for a second year in a row. This enchanting experience aims to spread Christmas cheer while raising much-needed funds for SASH UK, a charity dedicated to preventing youth homelessness.

The festive-filled retreat allows guests to enjoy a warm and nostalgic stay, with a blend of traditional and modern elements creating the perfect getaway ahead of the holiday season. Designed with warm lighting and nostalgic touches, the dรฉcor evokes the spirit of the season, fostering a festive atmosphere reminiscent of cherished Christmas memories.

After a day of exploring York, guests can unwind with a luxurious hot chocolate from the in-room Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser, while enjoying the comforting scent of the White Companyโ€™s Winter fragrance โ€“ a perfect addition to a cosy winter evening.

Christmas is about giving

In keeping with the Christmas spirit of giving, the rooms are home to a โ€˜giving treeโ€™ whereby guests can donate to SASH, a Yorkshire-based charity that supports vulnerable young people.

York is the ultimate winter getaway, brimming with historic charm and enchanting experiences right on the hotelโ€™s doorstep. From the delightful ambiance of the St. Nicholas Fair to the festive stalls of Shambles Market, itโ€™s the ideal destination for Christmas shopping. For those seeking adventure, ‘Those Ghosts of Christmas Past’ evening walking tours offer a glimpse into Yorkโ€™s haunting history, while for chocolate lovers, The Chocolate Story promises a sweet escape into a world of indulgence.

Simon Grace, General Manager at Hotel Indigo York, said: โ€œOur Christmas experience room was met with much excitement last year and we are thrilled to continue this offering in 2024. This year, while focusing on celebrating Yorkโ€™s confectionary heritage we are also proud to work with SASH, a charity that holds a special place in our hearts, helping vulnerable young people in York find a safe place to stay. With our โ€˜giving treeโ€™, we aim to raise vital funds over the festive season and support the incredible work SASH does to provide stability for those in need.โ€
