The business travel industry has voiced their opposition in strong terms against Donald Trump’s proposal to force social media disclosure for visitors to the United States. The US President is threating foreign travellers with a total disclosure of their social media going back five years…
New data from Business Travel Show Europe shows just 2.5% of corporate travel professionals think the US should be permitted to request this information. A further 0.84% agree in principle, but only if applied exclusively to tourists.
Executive Assistants or Personal Assistants organising travel executives and teams would be one of the most affected by the new rule. It’s the EAs and PAs in many cases who would need to provide the information and accounts to comply with Trump’s proposed social media disclosure rule.
Business travel industry oppose Trump’s social media disclosure rule
In contrast, 85% of corporate travel professionals oppose the proposal outright. Among them, opinion is evenly split as to whether the policy will ultimately be implemented.
If the Trump administration does succeed in bringing the proposal into law:
- 18% of corporates would send fewer travellers to the US
- 81% would rely more on video conferencing
- 49% there would be no impact on their travel programme
The findings highlight growing concern around data privacy and the administrative burden such a requirement could create for global mobility teams.
Louis Magliaro, Executive Vice President, The BTN Group, said: “Corporate travellers already navigate complex visa processes, security checks and compliance requirements. Adding mandatory disclosure of personal social media history could add more red tape when travel managers are already under pressure to increase efficiencies, cut costs and improve traveller wellbeing.”
