How to network at events: A practical guide for PAs

Most professionals are aware of the importance of networking, this certainly includes PAs too. But there are a few ground rules that make all the difference in how beneficial the events you attend will be. We look at how to make the most of the networking opportunities presented at every event, including the PA Life Club FAM Trips and showcases and our flagship gathering…

Making every conversation count: how can PAs network like a pro

For many Executive Assistants, Personal Assistants and Office Managers, networking doesn’t always come naturally. You’re often the person introducing other people, making everyone else feel welcome or ensuring the event runs smoothly. Turning the spotlight onto yourself can feel unfamiliar.

The good news? Networking isn’t about collecting as many business cards or LinkedIn connections as possible. It’s about building genuine relationships that can help you throughout your career.

Do your homework

Before attending any event, spend a few minutes looking at who’s likely to be there. Are there venues you’re interested in? Suppliers you’d like to work with? Fellow assistants from organisations you’d love to learn from?

Having a shortlist of people you’d like to meet gives you confidence and purpose when you arrive.

Set yourself a realistic goal

Rather than trying to speak to everyone, aim for three to five meaningful conversations.

One useful conversation with someone who understands your challenges or can help solve a problem is far more valuable than 20 rushed introductions you’ll barely remember the following week.

Don’t stay with people you already know

It’s tempting to spend the whole event chatting to colleagues or assistants you’ve met before. While catching up is important, challenge yourself to spend at least half your time meeting new people.

One simple approach is to arrive early. Conversations are often easier before established groups have formed, and everyone is looking to make connections.

Ask better questions

Moving beyond “What do you do?” creates much more interesting conversations.

Try asking:

  • What’s been your biggest event challenge this year?
  • Have you discovered any brilliant venues recently?
  • What’s one supplier you couldn’t live without?
  • Which trends are you seeing in corporate events?
  • Is this your first PA Life event?

Questions like these quickly uncover shared experiences and useful recommendations.

Listen more than you talk

The best networkers aren’t necessarily the loudest—they’re often the best listeners.

People remember those who show genuine interest, ask thoughtful follow-up questions and make others feel heard. You’ll also learn far more by listening than by delivering your own elevator pitch.

Think beyond today

Not every conversation will lead to an immediate opportunity, and that’s perfectly fine.

The Sales Manager you meet today may become the venue partner for next year’s conference. The EA you chat with over coffee could recommend you for your next role. The supplier demonstrating a new service might solve a challenge you’ve not even encountered yet.

Professional relationships often develop over months—or even years.

Follow up while you’re still fresh in their mind

Networking doesn’t end when the event finishes.

Connect on LinkedIn within a day or two and include a short personal message.

Instead of the standard invitation, try:

“It was great meeting you at the PA Life event. I really enjoyed our conversation about sustainable venues and hope our paths cross again soon.”

A personalised message is far more memorable than a generic connection request.

Practice makes perfect: Make the most of networking at PA Life events

One of the biggest advantages of attending PA Life events is that everyone has something in common. Whether you’re an experienced Executive Assistant, new to the profession or responsible for office management, you’re surrounded by people who understand your role.

And PA Life Club is a network solely for the assistant community. It’s free to join here.

This September offers two fantastic opportunities to grow your network.

The PA Life Midlands Mixer by PA Life brings together business support professionals and leading suppliers in a relaxed, informal setting. It’s an excellent opportunity to discover new venues, hospitality partners and services while meeting fellow assistants from across the Midlands and beyond.

Later in the month, the PA Life Summit offers an inspiring day of learning, networking and professional development. Alongside expert speakers and industry insights, the Summit creates countless opportunities to exchange ideas, share best practice and build relationships with peers, sponsors and venue partners. Many assistants say the connections they make at the Summit continue long after the event itself, often leading to new collaborations, recommendations and friendships.

Remember—you all have something in common

One of the biggest misconceptions about networking is that you need to impress people.

In reality, everyone in the room is there for the same reason: to meet new people, exchange ideas and build valuable professional relationships.

The next time you walk into a networking event, remember that the conversation you’re about to have could introduce you to your next favourite venue, trusted supplier, mentor, career opportunity or lifelong industry friend.

All it takes is saying hello.
