From festival to festive: What EAs and PAs can learn from festivals when planning corporate events

Forget the seating plan and the lukewarm turkey. Liz Taylor, founder of events specialist Taylor Lynn Corporation (TLC), says the future of the corporate Christmas party lies in borrowing the best bits of the festival world; atmosphere, freedom, shared experiences and celebrations people actually want to attend. EAs and PAs are expected to make their companies’ festive celebrations to experiences that appeal to all…

The traditional corporate Christmas party is overdue a rethink.

For years, the formula remained largely unchanged: a hotel ballroom, a three-course meal and a dancefloor. Job done.

But expectations have changed. Employees have changed. And so has the role of the EA and PA.

Today’s EAs and PAs are under increasing pressure to create experiences that genuinely engage people, justify budgets and reflect company culture. That’s no small task.

And some of the best inspiration isn’t coming from the corporate world at all. It’s coming from festivals.

People want experiences, not agendas: Bring on the festival vibe to corporate events

Look at the success of the UK’s festival industry. People don’t attend simply to watch a headline act. They go for the atmosphere, the anticipation, the food, the discovery and the feeling of being part of something memorable.

The most successful EAs and PAs are no longer asking, “What should we book?” They’re asking, “How do we want people to feel?”

That’s a very different brief.

Atmosphere is everything

One of the biggest lessons festivals have taught us is that atmosphere matters.

Great events engage people from the moment they arrive. Every detail contributes to how people feel from the second they walk through the door.

For EAs and PAs, that means moving beyond logistics and thinking more like experience designers.

Shared experiences build stronger teams

Many businesses now see their Christmas party as one of the few opportunities to bring an entire team together outside the workplace.

But here’s where I think many companies get it wrong. They focus on formality instead of connection.

People don’t spend their weekends sitting at round tables with colleagues they’ve barely spoken to all year. They spend them with people they genuinely enjoy being around. The best corporate events recognise that.

I’m not suggesting abandoning professionalism altogether, but there is a reason festival-style events are proving so popular. They give people freedom to move, mingle, choose their own conversations and spend time with colleagues they actually want to celebrate with.

That’s when teams bond. That’s when culture comes to life. And that’s when people leave talking about the experience rather than the seating plan.

When done well, these moments strengthen culture and create the connections that businesses spend the rest of the year trying to build.

Why Christmas parties are changing

The most exciting festive events now borrow heavily from the festival world.

Immersive environments. Interactive food and drink experiences. Unexpected moments.

People want celebrations that feel different from their everyday lives.

That’s exactly the thinking behind the new Après Ski Christmas experience we’re creating at Tatton Park this year; an immersive environment designed to encourage people to connect, celebrate and enjoy being together.

The EA and PA opportunity in shaping events

For EAs and PAs, this shift presents a real opportunity.

The Christmas party is no longer just an event to organise. It’s a chance to influence company culture, recognise achievements and bring people together in a meaningful way.

The best events aren’t remembered because the food was hot or the timings ran to schedule. They’re remembered because they made people feel valued, connected and part of something bigger.

Long after the decorations come down, that’s what people take back to the workplace.

Experience a festival-inspired Christmas party

If this year, you’re determined to give your team a Christmas party they’ll actually remember, perhaps it’s time to ditch the seating plan and embrace a more festival-inspired approach to festive celebrations.
