Making meetings more sustainable

Sustainability has become a major consideration for every business. Whatever we do, there is a responsibility to reduce our impact on the environment. And meetings are no different. In fact, Marriott Bonvoy Events conducted research with meeting bookers revealing that over 60% of them consider sustainability when they choose a venue.

Sustainability in meeting venues as standard

The London Heathrow Marriott provides an excellent case study of some of the environmental initiatives Marriott International has introduced. Like with a lot of things, change had to start from the top. So, we went up to the roof. And in 2012, installed a greenhouse complete with a windmill and solar panels as well as a greenhouse built to provide the hotel kitchen with fresh herbs and vegetables.

The windmill is a clever way of harnessing wind power to light up the LED Marriott sign. It reduces a huge amount of electricity every day. Itโ€™s estimated to save a staggering 12 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

A greener hotel

New, water-saving bathroom fittings have made a big contribution. The hotelโ€™s water usage has been reduced by 25.91% since 2015. Whilst bringing laundry services in-house has saved a staggering 1.7 million litres of water a year.

Meeting our commitments on waste

By 2025, Marriott International has pledged to reduce the amount of waste the business sends to landfill by 45% and food waste by 50%. Once again, London Heathrow Marriott is at the forefront in helping us meet our commitments. Anna Zadurska, the Executive Chef, is a real champion of food waste reduction. In her โ€˜Food Waste Labโ€™, the kitchen team has come up with ingenious ways to use seemingly waste products in their recipes. Finding a delicious new use for everything from banana peel to watermelon skin! The banana peel burger is fast becoming a favourite.

Award-winning sustainability in meeting venues

As a result of its efforts, London Heathrow Marriott has been awarded the prestigious Keep Britain Tidy Green Key award. This is well-deserved recognition of the hotelโ€™s contribution to increasing the use of sustainable methods and technology and creating behavioural change in staff, guests and suppliers alike.
