Experts claim flexible working makes you ill

The hot topic in discussions of work-life balance all point to flexible working as a solution to stress. But some experts now believe the practice can make employees ill by keeping them stressed longer.

Professor Gail Kinman of the University of Bedfordshire says working remotely or part-time shuts employees off from social networks and career prospects. Her research also shows that some find it difficult to draw a line between work and home when they remote in and are more likely to answer calls and emails outside of working hours.

โ€œIf you keep worrying about work, your systems never really go down to baseline so you donโ€™t recover properly,โ€ she comments. โ€œYou might sleep, but not properly; the effectiveness of your immune system reduces.โ€

Kinman adds that modern technology that enables constant connection to work is exasperating the problem, encouraging quicker responses and multitasking.
