Checking in: Fraser Suites

In the first of an occasional series of hotel reviews, Colette Doyle heads to Glasgow to vet whatโ€™s on offer for the business traveller.

Glasgow came to prominence through its trading links with the West Indies and Americas, so the Merchant City is an appropriate name for its historic town centre. Taking pride of place among the trendy boutiques, bustling bars and cultural experiences offered by the many theatres in the area is Fraser Suites, a newly refurbished collection of serviced apartments. Located within easy walking distance of the main business district, they are set in an attractively renovated 1850s building, which was once a bank; the classic Victorian faรงade was designed by JT Rochead, architect of the Wallace Monument in nearby Stirling.

After many years spent reviewing hotels, I can vouch for the accuracy of the publicity material when it describes the suites as โ€œspaciousโ€; the one-bed apartment is almost as big as my London flat. The set-up expertly combines the facilities of a hotel โ€“ thereโ€™s a 24-hour concierge and breakfast is served daily between 8am and 11am โ€“ with all the amenities of home. You can also stay for as little as one night, or take advantage of discounts for long-term rates.

The kitchen/dining area, complete with hob, is an ideal solution for those whose business requires them to take an extended stay in Scotlandโ€™s cultural capital. A handy Tesco Metro nearby means you donโ€™t have to blow the expense account on dining out โ€“ although you may be tempted to do so, with such notable culinary establishments on your doorstep as The Corinthian Club.

The sleek beige and burgundy colour scheme and wood panelling decor is inevitably neutral, although in the bedroom striped cushions add a dash of colour, along with carefully chosen co-ordinating accessories. The businessperson is clearly very much in mind, as evidenced by the complimentary wifi on offer and the availability of a designated meeting room equipped with cutting-edge technology.

To help guests enjoy the best of what Glasgowโ€™s Merchant City has to offer, Fraser Suites has created the Corporate Club, a voucher scheme that offers substantial discounts at neighbourhood outlets such as acclaimed Scottish restaurant Arisaig; and James Dunโ€™s House, a luxury Aveda salon offering a range of first-class hairdressing, beauty and spa treatments.

With its Celtic vibe and friendly inhabitants, Glasgow is justifiably proud of its reputation for giving visitors a warm welcome, and Fraser Suites makes for a worthy addition to its hospitality offering.
