Flemish mining site becomes new meetings venue

The Flemish Minister for Tourism Ben Weyts and VisitFlanders have invested โ‚ฌ2.2 million (ยฃ1.94 million) ย in โ€˜Thor Centralโ€™, a new meeting and conference venue on the old mining site of Waterschei in the province of Limburg.

This financial support has helped to transform the industrial heritage site into a one-of-a-kind event location that will attract lucrative business travellers to the city of Genk.

โ€œBusiness travellers are generous contributors to our economy,โ€ said Weyts. โ€œWe will fully tap into this growing market. We have a well-thought-out strategy and continuously invest in the development and expansion of our meeting venues, products and services.โ€

Alongside VisitFlanders, Weyts has invested the cash to create Thor Central, ย a brand-new convention venue on the Waterschei mining site in Genk with meeting capacity for up to 300 people. Thor Central offers contemporary meeting facilities in a historic setting.

Thor Central is part of Thor Park, Limburgโ€™s hotspot for technology, energy and innovation. The technology park is home to many innovative companies and start-ups.
