Gimblett’s Guide to cheese takes readers on a grand tour of the country’s best cheesemakers

By Claire Morris

Gimblett’s Guide to the Best of British Cheeses has been published in celebration of British cheesemakers just as Covid threatens the future of the industry.

The first published guide focusing purely on cheese, not only highlights the very best in British cheesemaking, but also provides tasting notes and drink matching to enhance your enjoyment of the best artisan cheeses available in the UK today.

Cheesemaker Francis Gimblett toured the country to visit each dairy, interview the cheesemakers and taste their finest cheeses. A veteran in the artisan food and drink industry, Francis travelled from Cornwall to Inverness, often sleeping overnight in his Land Rover, over a 2-year period to write this guide.

During lockdown, he has been running not-for-profit fortnightly Zoom events called Meet Your Cheesemaker – where samples of cheese are sent to participants to taste whilst he interviews the Cheesemaker.

Francis Gimblett., says: “In the current climate, artisan British cheesemakers are suffering badly. Restaurants, easily their largest customers, are again closed. Other routes to market have become increasingly difficult and dairies are having to pivot their businesses to survive. Producers are pleading with the public to buy direct to save cheeses from being forgotten, and to keep their businesses alive. Cheese isn’t just for Christmas.”

This is the book that provides all the information you need for choosing the very best cheese – keep the British Cheese industry going in 2020.
