Heroic Measures – Jo-Ann Power
(The Wild Rose Press, £14.99)
The story follows Gwen Spencer on her journey from student to World War I nurse, travelling from her home town to the battlefields of France. The tale is a powerful and accurate depiction of the struggles of the medical professionals who lived in the same conditions as the soldiers they treated. The dialogue is a bit forced at times, but it’s easy to look past that to the strong characters.
Gwen’s home life reminds me more of a period drama, with her cruel aunt taking out her frustrations on Gwen and her little sister, but her relationship with her fellow nurses feels genuine and the book offers a good read.
