The Landmark London – an oasis of luxury for high end stays, dining and events

The Landmark London in Marylebone truly is one of the most magnificent hotels in London, and this says a lot. The five-star Grande Dame hotel has, since its debut over 125 years ago, remained an icon of quintessential and elegant London charm. Our Editor had a pleasure to pay a visit to take in the splendor. The visit included drinks at the Champagne Bar, located in the awe-inspiring Atrium, a tour of the grand event spaces, which include two ballrooms, and ended with a delicious dinner on an eighth floor private dining space overlooking the Atrium.

The Landmark Hotel is an oasis of luxury and serenity in the heart of the capital

The hotel is one of the oldest railway hotels in London and dates back to the romantic era of train travel. This is still evident in the opulent design, grandeur and timeless service and which today blends seamlessly with the  contemporary flair and five-star amenities they offer. This is best represented in its iconic and soaring eight-storey-high glass atrium that has been at the centre of the hotel since its opening.

With 300 rooms, 51 of which are some of London’s largest and most luxurious suites, the hotel offers an elevated experience and sumptuous comfort, all centrally located to explore London. When guests arrive, they are awed by the towering palm trees and eight-storey glass atrium. A welcoming check in experience is followed by a relaxed journey to the room.

In 2023, the hotel underwent a magnificent £1.3 million refurbishment. These renovations span many of The Landmark London’s well–known spaces, including the addition of the lavish Champagne Bar on the previous Garden Terrace and new elevated features to the renowned Winter Garden Restaurant – the heart of the hotel. This follows the launch of Great Central Pub by Matt Fletcher which was completed in late 2022.

The Landmark London restaurants include a traditional British pub

During the stay, guests can dine at one of The Landmark London’s outstanding restaurants including Great Central Pub by Matt Fletcher – serving up British pub classics – The Winter Garden – the elegant AA Rosette restaurant – or The Champagne Bar which serves a light range of seafood-centric small plates, caviar, blinis & classic garnishes, desserts and an impressive High Sea High Tea. There is also the elegant Mirror Bar ideal for pre- and post-dinner cocktails.

Centrally-located in Marylebone, there are a plethora of shops, restaurants and London landmarks to explore, and the helpful concierge is always happy to guide guests and make recommendations. There really is no need to leave the hotel with the fantastic amenities on offer, however. The hotel is also home to a sensuous spa featuring a health club, four treatment rooms and a sublime 15-metre chlorine-free indoor swimming pool, one of the only five-star hotels in the capital to have one.

Four wonderful drinking and dining destinations

The Landmark London features four drinking and dining destinations, each with its own unique character, offering and mark to be left on the guests that visit.

The Winter Garden

Set under the hotel’s grand eight-storey stunning glass atrium and iconic palm trees, the Winter Garden offers one of London’s most memorable dining experiences.

The restaurant serves a Modern European lunch and dinner menu of exquisite and seasonal dishes, which can be tailored for children and special preferences, and is also home to one of England’s finest traditional Afternoon Teas.

The Winter Garden is two AA Rosette-accredited, outlining the calibre of dishes and service, and is head up by Executive Chef, Gary Klaner. Sample dishes span luxurious options such as Twice Baked Kentish Blue Cheese Soufflé, Lobster Thermidor and Roast Rack of Cumbrian Lamb.

The award-winning Afternoon Tea (Afternoon Tea Awards – Highly Commended 2019) was thought up by Pastry Chef Mauro Di Lieto, and includes a selection of sandwiches, freshly baked scones and intricately-designed cakes and pastries – ideal for enjoying with a chilled glass of Champagne.

The restaurant has also undergone an exciting renovation. Its famous palm trees have been modernised, introducing new fronds from Spain, to enhance the look and fullness of the well-loved design feature. The expert servers have also experienced a revamp of their traditional uniforms, incorporating colourful new designs with floral elements to reflect the natural beauty of the space. Each new feature brings a stylish, modern feel to the elegant charm that the restaurant offers.

Great Central Pub by Matt Fletcher

A gastropub from the core, Great Central Pub is a new, more relaxed concept for The Landmark London. Run by Chef de Cuisine Matt Fletcher, the pub marries the old with the new, honouring the original design, with interiors paying homage to the romantic era of travel.

Fletcher’s menus offer comforting old pub classics with a modern twist, with options including Beer Battered British Market Fish, classic Bangers ‘n’ Mash and a Ginger Pig Steak & Ale Pie. The pub focuses more on locally sourced beers and a refined wine list. Its offering is designed to be enjoyed in a warm ambience that evokes long conversations on the sofas by the open fireplace, in a pleasant corner, or over dinner on the high tables.

Mirror Bar

Mirror Bar invites guests to revel in the glamourous ambience of a secret London hideaway. The beautiful and sophisticated space offers an innovative menu of expertly-crafted cocktails, fine wines, spirits and beers, alongside light snacks and bites.

Expert mixologists are on-hand to guide guests through the creative and bespoke menu of cocktails, including some of London’s best martinis and The Landmark London’s signature cocktail The Marylebone Mist. This fruity drink is a lightly shaken mix of local Marylebone Gin, pear liqueur, apple and lime juice and finished with absinthe mist. The cocktail menu is refined and changes seasonally.

Champagne Bar

The Champagne Bar is the jewel in the crown of The Landmark London’s 2023 refurbishment, serving up a wide range of luxury Champagnes including Taittinger, Bollinger and Pol Roger, among many others. The space also serves a light range of seafood-centric small plates, caviar, blinis & classic garnishes and desserts. You can also enjoy High Sea High Tea – a seafood-inspired afternoon tea – available Saturday and Sunday between 1:00pm and 5:00pm, serving fresh seafood sandwiches.

Highlights of the small plates menu include a Ceviche of scallops with tiger milk, heritage carrots, and passionfruit, as well as Brixham white crab with avocado and tomato on top of a toasted crumpet and drizzled with brown crab butter. Caviar choices span Golden Oscietra, Oscietra and Platinum. Platinum Caviar is the hybrid of the Oscietra and Siberian Sturgeons – boasting an intense and robust flavour.

For those guests indulging in the High Seas High Tea (£88.00 per person including a glass of Champagne), they can expect afternoon tea classics with a seafood twist. The star of the show is the freshest seafood sandwiches, with filling choices varying from Cornish white crab, accompanied with miso, avocado and pink grapefruit; Tartlet of poached langoustine, black truffle, cauliflower and fried capers or Yellow fin tuna with ponzu and black sesame on toasted rye with fennel butter. Traditional and warm freshly baked scones follow with a selection of hand-crafted desserts from The Landmark London’s expert Pastry Chef, Mauro Di Lieto.

Guests are welcomed by elegantly dressed hosts and hostesses and are guided to a seat either at the standout golden raised bar or the plush sofas and armchairs spanning the vast terrace. Whilst leafing through the menus, diners will enjoy twinkling piano music from the Winter Garden Restaurant below. A romantic setting, diners can relax under in the dazzling sunlight during the day, or beautiful starry sky at night, visible through the glass atrium ceiling.
