Learn the limits of the office dress code

Looks may not be everything, but experts say you should dress as though they are if you want to get ahead at work. It would appear, however, that there is a point at which some women take the idea of looking good a little bit too far.

A study published in the journal Psychology of Women Quarterly found the degree to which inappropriate clothing matters might depend on the type of job you have. Research shows that women in managerial roles who dress overly sexy are considered less intelligent and competent than those in similar positions who wear more conservative attire. However, the view of women in non-supervisory roles, such as receptionists, is less impacted by the way they dress.

Human resources consultant Elaine Varelas of Keystone Partners in Boston says there is still a limit to the dress code, regardless of your position. She also believes men and women are going to judge you and what you’re wearing “is going to have a huge impact on that”.
