Showing Up

Showing Up: how to make a greater impact at work โ€“ Tim Robson

(Capstone, ยฃ14.99)

Although this book is written in an easy-to-read style, at first I found it hard to engage with the subject. Iโ€™m not sure I would have continued to read it under ordinary circumstances, but Iโ€™m glad I persevered.

The idea of the workplace as โ€œschool with payโ€ was easy to grasp and I could see that differing elements of this had occurred throughout my own career. The scenarios given were recognisable, which enabled me to relate to them and appreciate where they can and do arise. Although there are no easy solutions given, there are questions posed in each area to prompt thinking about how to change these behaviours. There are also suggestions for new ways of thinking. The book then moves on to describe four components, or gears, to enable you to leave behind school with pay and progress in work and life.

It was a challenge to get into, but worth a read if youโ€™re serious about your career.
