Why South Bank? Discover London’s destination for meetings and events

From riverside restaurants and iconic cultural venues to unforgettable celebrations, South Bank brings together everything event organisers need in the heart of the capital. Kelly Bliss, who oversees destination marketing for London’s South Bank, discusses what makes the neighbourhood such a compelling destination for meetings, events and celebrations.

What sets South Bank apart from other areas of London?

We often describe it as London’s Centre Stage, because so many of the capital’s big moments happen here. We have the BAFTAs at Royal Festival Hall, the London Film Festival, red-carpet premieres and the iconic New Year’s Eve fireworks. There’s a real sense of occasion about being here.

Then of course there’s the location. Right on the river with the London Eye and looking out across at Big Ben in one direction, and St Paul’s in the other. You really can’t get more London!

What role does the platform play in helping EAs, PAs and event organisers find a space that fits their event?

South Bank Venues is part of South Bank London, the destination marketing brand for the neighbourhood, so we’re completely independent and impartial. Our role is to simply showcase the possibilities and venues South Bank has to offer. Our website features a directory which you can easily filter down to create a shortlist of spaces that meet your needs. Whether you’re after a PDR for 10, a rooftop space, or a ballroom for 1000.

What experiences would you recommend to organisers looking to create something memorable for their guests?

One of South Bank’s biggest advantages is that you don’t necessarily have to choose just one experience.

Start with a ride on the London Eye, add something fun and competitive like a game of boules, and then finish with dinner and drinks overlooking the river. Or combine one of our cultural attractions with a drinks reception or private dinner nearby.

That ability to mix and match is what can make an event here really memorable. You can give guests a proper taste of London – culture, entertainment, food, drink and those iconic river views – all within walking distance.

Looking ahead to the festive season and into the new year, what are you most excited about across South Bank?

Christmas is always particularly special – lights twinkling along the river, the festive markets and pop-ups – there’s just a fantastic atmosphere that you want to be a part of.

But there’s constantly something new happening here – Caravan is opening a new restaurant in November and we’ve just welcomed Gordon Ramsay Restaurants to Sea Containers. Dishoom are set to open next year and the team at Fallow are taking over OXO Tower Restaurant. Big new developments are in the pipeline too. There’s so much more to come, and for us, it’s about helping more event organisers discover just how much is possible in one neighbourhood.
