Workers share ways workplaces need to tackle demotivation

Tiles Direct is urging companies to reassess office conditions following a study revealing ways workers lose motivation in the workplace. 61% of young people and over a quarter of British workers admitted to making career decisions based on the aesthetic of an office, with many being put off a job by how oppressive their workspace looked and felt.

Good sources of natural light was also considered vital, with 41% believing a better-lit office would give workers a boost in energy, creativity and happiness. Over a fifth of workers wished for the opportunity to personalise their work stations and for firms to make improvements to break areas to encourage healthy breathers from the working day.

Facilities such as access to a coffee machine or water cooler ranked particularly high for women, with fears that workers offered less luxuries didnโ€™t feel they were being appreciated and produced lesser work than employees in other companies. These concerns are supported by other studies, for example a fifth of those surveyed by Peldon Rose admitted that their workspace hinders their professional productivity, while over half of job hunters said theyโ€™d actively avoid jobs with a negative work environment.

The design of personal working environments is also important to many, with some admitting theyโ€™d like to trade in their office furniture for more comfortable or ergonomic options, while others wished their company layouts and colour schemes needed to be more engaging.
