Blue Monday: Interview with Steph Hind, Co-Founder of Heka

PA Life’s feature writer interviewed Steph Hind, the Co-Founder of Heka, a platform designed to help all manner of organisations service their employees with flexible, tailored benefits across thousands of choices, ensuring that employees have access to the support offerings they need, no matter their personal or professional goals. We explored the topic of ‘Blue Monday’ with Hind, who shared her perspective and top tips for navigating this challenging day as well as the wider issues affecting our mental wellbeing in general.ย  ย

Blue Monday typically falls on the third Monday of January and is often dubbed the “most depressing day of the year.” Coined in 2005, the concept of Blue Monday is based on a combination of factors. The most common contributors to many feeling ‘blue’ include post holiday financial strain, dark winter days and the New Year’s resolutions you vowed to stick to, starting to slip away.

How does investing in employees’ wellness benefit organisations?

Hind highlighted how closely employee wellness is tied to business success, pointing out that creating a positive work environment is a key part of any job. She explains, โ€œWhen employees feel happy and supported, they thrive and do their best work.โ€ Prioritising wellness doesnโ€™t just help the employeesโ€”it also benefits the company by reducing sick days, increasing productivity, and helping retain staff for the long run.

How have the challenges of the new year affected employees?

We delved into the topical conversation of New Yearโ€™s resolutions and the overwhelming pressure employees often face as they navigate the start of a New Year. From new business plans to ambitious targets and KPIs, the demands can be daunting.

This is where Heka comes in. It is a platform designed to create a space for employees to share their struggles and find support, helping them feel less isolated. Heka connects employees with suppliers that provide this service, helping all employees tackle any kind of challenge. For example supporting the younger generation amid rising interest rates and the cost of living crisis, or women navigating challenges of the menopause.

Employers can also use Heka to address both physical and mental health concerns in the workplace. Being accessible to private healthcare, menopause support, and physiotherapy, Heka ensures employees receive tailored care. These offerings are especially vital for women facing unique workplace challenges and for those in need of timely medical assistance, reducing reliance on backlogged public healthcare systems.

You don’t need to have it all at once

Steph Hind, who shared her ‘CEO secrets’ with the BBC back in 2021, discussed how you can run a business and raise children. Hind openly expressed the struggles with PA Life, how itโ€™s simply not possible to have everything at once. But does note that “this does not mean you cant have it all over a period of time.” It is all about being realistic, we don’t need to be super humans and have it all at once.” She also shares that Heka provides organisations with access to over 25,000 unique wellbeing experiences, services, and products tailored to improve employee happiness and engagement. Using AI positively to tailor each personal experience, improving all ages and work life balance.

Is Blue Monday a PR Stunt, or does this draw attention to issues in the workplace?

PA Life has challenged the concept of Blue Monday, suggesting it may draw attention away from the ongoing mental health challenges employees face year-round. Some argue that Blue Monday overshadows the deeper, more persistent issues in workplace mental health.

However, Hind takes a different perspective. While acknowledging the commercial aspect of Blue Monday, she emphasises that it serves as a timely reminder of the importance of mental health awarenessโ€”not just on one day but throughout the year. Itโ€™s also a chance for employers to reflect on the well-being of their teams and recognize that everyone, no matter how capable, needs time to recharge and recover.
