UK employees working longer than ever by choice

The working life of the average UK citizen is getting longer with each generation, but research shows that it may be by choice rather than out of necessity. More than half of employed people older than 55 say they are happy to work past the current default retirement age.

While 54% of those surveyed want to keep working after they turn 65, one in four say they want to reduce their hours and work part-time, either in their current job or with a new employer. The nationwide study was conducted by insurance provider MetLife as part of a report on pensions.

The need for more part-time work within companies is apparent from the results of the survey, with 60% saying they would move to a new position to work fewer hours. Meanwhile, the majority of those who would be content to continue their full-time hours are likely to stay in their current job (90%).

The research also shows that employees are not taking or getting the information they need to adapt and make choices on income requirements post-retirement. One in five respondents say they regret not having taken financial advice, while only 29% have sought guidance.
