Nine essential qualities of top PAs

It has been said many times that behind every great leader is an even better assistant. As those in the business world know, there are certain skills needed to make a good PA. Here, Wales PA of the Year 2014 and Founder of the Cardiff PA Network Catrin Morgan outlines the top qualities assistants need to possess.

Partnership
An executive has to be able to trust his or her PA, so build a partnership with your boss. This will help you know the right time to get involved with a situation.

Initiative
Managers love it when their PA can work on his or her own initiative. Make decisions and take action based on your understanding of high-level objectives.

Unravel complexities
A good PA must be able to see the big picture in order to solve problems and anticipate the needs of an executive before they ask for help.

Free up time
An executive?s time is always in high demand, so you have to guard access to your boss. Be professional and handle anything you can to free up their schedule.

Self-awareness
You are often the first point of contact between clients and the business, so maintain a professional attitude at all times.

Be alert
Good PAs are the eyes and ears of their bosses, alerting them to any problems that arise. Be aware of your environment at all times.

Clarity
Excellent communication skills are essential to any PA. If you want to build a good working relationship with your boss and colleagues, communicate clearly.

Tech savvy
Technology has taken over the business world, so it?s important to understand how to use it effectively. It can be a great tool in handling your workload.

Desire to learn
The PA role is constantly changing and growing. Keep an open mind and be willing to continuously learn and adapt.
