How to make the grieving process easier at work

Losing a loved one is never easy, but it can be made worse upon returning to work. Your colleagues will likely know what has happened and they might feel the need to tread on eggshells around you. But you can make it easier by being honest with them.

Amy Morin is the author of 13 Things Mentally Strong People Donโ€™t Do and she recently told Lifehacker that honesty is the best policy when it comes to returning to work after a loss. While your colleagues mean well by giving you their best wishes, itโ€™s a conversation that might distract you for the rest of the day.

Morin suggests telling your co-workers what youโ€™re going through from the start. Send an email to thank them for their condolences and let them know exactly how youโ€™d like to be approached. If questions and hushed sympathies will upset you, ask them not to bring it up and only come to you with work-related topics.

By addressing the situation early, you can save yourself the pain of reliving grief when all you want to do is focus on work.
