Katie Mellor, founder of KM Virtual Office, is a seasoned member of the industry having established her company back in 2014, providing VAs for businesses across the UK. Here, she shares how she built her company from scratch and why she can’t resist a good rom-com novel.
Can you tell me about your business and how it begun?
I came to the decision to start up KM Virtual Office, as I have always had a passion for organising people and helping them set up systems and processes to make them efficient in both work and personal lives, while giving them some valuable time back.
The dream became reality when I met my now husband, who lived over three and a half hours away with an established business, so he couldn’t easily settle in my area. It was at that point, I decided to take the leap and create my virtual assistant business. Everything happens for a reason.
Why is organisation so important to you?
I really feel that if you are well organised, then you are a well-oiled, time saving machine. I spend a lot of time with my clients to understand what they do and how they currently work. Once I know how they tick, I can help them achieve a more organised, balanced life and I love seeing the end result of a happy, more relaxed person.
How can your business help assistants? Why should they come to you?
I think the biggest reason that they should come to us, is that we will encourage them and pass on our knowledge of what we feel you need to succeed. We grow by helping others and that is one of our core values here at KM HQ. Watching other assistants grow and develop into what they want, with our support is the best feeling.
“We are currently looking at a training course for either people that want to start a career as a VA, or those that are one and need some further support and guidance to help their business grow.”
Where would you like to see the business go in the future?
I would like to continue to grow, taking on even more fabulous VAs and helping even more wonderful clients. We are currently looking at a training course for either people that want to start a career as a VA, or those that are one and need some further support and guidance to help their business grow.
What’s been your biggest achievement?
I think for me, it was going from being just me and my laptop, working from my living room to growing into an established business, with an incredible team (I am very lucky) that is continuing to blossom.
Do you have any guilty pleasures?
Chocolate, coffee and red wine…not necessarily in that order, but I don’t actually think I would survive without them!
What’s been your favourite book to date?
I love to read and a good rom-com that you can lose yourself in is always a winner for me. I am just reading Paige Toon’s new book ‘Five Years from Now’ as always, I am not disappointed!
