Balance a healthy lifestyle with the party season

Everyone knows that eating healthily, drinking less alcohol and cutting back on sugar help us to function more effectively. During the festive period however, how are you realistically expected to maintain your healthy lifestyle without missing out on the celebrations?

It is possible to combine party celebrations with yoga classes without one cancelling the other out. Enter the new trend: Healthonism, a term now known, courtesy of the JWT Innovation Group.

So how exactly do you get the balance right? Simple. Just take note of these 8 easy steps…

  1. Keep up your exercise regime. The healthonist doesn’t miss reformer pilates for anything. The day before and after a party stick to something like spinning – you want to sweat.
  2. Don’t carb load. Healthy fat and protein are digested more slowly, so stick to them and they’ll prevent alcohol from being absorbed too quickly into your bloodstream.
  3. Think about what you’re drinking. Red wine has on average less sugar than white. And put down those cocktails – they are FULL of sugar.
  4. Stay hydrated. Try alternating alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic. Between each glass of wine have a glass of water with lemon.
  5. Dance. It is cardio after all.
  6. If you want a snack when you get home, DON’T reach for the biscuit tin, make it a banana – they’re rich in potassium. Detox teas rehydrate and help to protect and restore your liver.
  7. Say goodbye to soothing your sore head the next morning with paracetamol, coffee and a bacon sarnie – instead turn to coconut water, it’s ultra-hydrating.
  8. Turmeric shots are little shots of goodness – they boast anti-inflammatory properties including iron, B6 and potassium.
