From the desk of Penelope Alice, Britain’s most fabulous PA: The Brewery summer party

It’s hard to believe it’s already mid-August. This summer has flown by and I haven’t been to nearly enough outdoor events. Luckily I tagged along to the Brewery’s secret garden party and got some fresh air after being cooped up in the office for weeks.

I’ve heard the venue’s name mentioned at networking events and have always wanted to visit, so last night was the perfect opportunity. I was greeted at the entrance by a friendly pair of entertainers dress as ‘hedge people’, who perfectly matched the scenery of vibrant flowers and fake grass under a large marquee.

My taste buds were immediately delighted by a welcoming pineapple and caramel mojito – an unusual combination, but one I thoroughly enjoyed. Later on I sampled a strawberry Bellini and it was simply delicious.

If I thought the drinks were good, the canapés were even better. My favourite light bites were fluffy pork scratchings topped with sweet crabmeat and sushi. As the night went on the dishes changed to bowl food, including a heritage salad with creamy goats’ cheese and scampi and chips, as well as miniature pork and apple sandwiches.

When it came time for the showaround I slipped in with the first group and was happy to find that the spaces look even better in person than in the pictures. The Porter Tun is stunning and its unobstructed views throughout the room might make a good choice for Mr P’s next gala dinner. I think the Smeaton Vaults have made it on to my list for a future Christmas party; the reactive LED lights can be set to match what’s being projected on the screen, so they’ll turn red if Santa Claus appears, or green if a tree is being displayed. How cool is that?
