Introducing The Principal York

The Principal York

The Principal York, formerly The Royal York Hotel, opened to guests on 1 November, and is located adjacent to York Train Station, just outside the Roman walls that enclose the heart of one of the countryโ€™s most historic cities. The property has been sensitively restored to create a hotel that combines historic architectural detail with all the comforts of the modern day.

Voted 2016 Hotel of the Year and 2016 Conference Venue of the Year in the Visit York Tourism awards, the 155-bedroom Principal York has a dedicated event centre, which can accommodate up to 410 delegates theatre-style, 300 for a banquet, 250 for a dinner and dance and 180 cabaret style. An additional 11 meeting and event rooms include the Oak Room, which can accommodate up to 160 delegates theatre style.

The guest bedrooms and suites, each decorated in a muted soft cream palette, feature polished marble bathrooms with freestanding sinks, large walk-in showers and Victorian roll-top baths by Villeroy & Boch. Accommodation at the front of the main building boasts uninterrupted views of the gothic York Minster towers, with generous double-height sash windows opening onto three acres of manicured gardens and a secluded water fountain.

The Principal York also features the Refectory Kitchen & Terrace, which is housed in a conservatory-style dining room, and uses regional ingredients such as salt aged rib beef and Harrogate blue cheese. Adjacent to the restaurant, the lively Chapter House Bar serves craft beers and cocktails including a wide variety of local gins and York Brewery beers.
