We are a nation of coffee drinkers, from a fresh cup of java in the morning to that warm, decaf milky drink before bed, Brits love coffee. In fact, we love it so much that the average Brit will guzzle down 676 cups of coffee a year.

Research into the nation’s coffee-drinking habits has revealed the extent of the nation’s caffeine craving, with the average adult sipping from ten cups of instant coffee a week.

A further three hot drinks will be bought from a cafe or coffee shop, meaning this will see the average Brit part with £303 a year on the caffeinated treat.

Leanne Beswick, coffee machine expert for, who commissioned the research, said: “We all love that first sip of coffee in the morning, which is why making proper coffee at home is more popular than ever.”

The study of 2,000 adults found a latte is the cuppa of choice for 23 per cent of those polled, while one in five prefer a cappuccino. The mighty flat white is the preferred java for one in seven Brits, and one in five will go for an Americano.

Those aged 45 to 54 are most likely to be partial to a latte, while younger coffee connoisseurs favour a cappuccino.

Researchers also revealed 42 per cent of Brits feel they haven’t truly woken up to the day ahead until they’ve had their first cup of coffee, and most will be sitting down to that hit of energy at 9.01am.

Two thirds of Brits enjoy the taste of coffee as well as its caffeine kick, with 43 per cent seeking out the aromatic flavour in coffee cake, while one in four love coffee ice cream.

It also emerged 36 per cent of conscientious Brits polled, via, have invested in a reusable cup which they take on the go with them to cut down on wasted cups. 63 per cent admit they worry about the impact disposable coffee cups are having on the environment.
