Research shows viruses more dangerous for jet lagged employees

Bosses don't think flu is a good enough reason to call in sick

A new study has revealed that viruses are more dangerous when they infect victims in the morning, and that those who work shifts or are jet lagged are more susceptible to infection.

The University of Cambridge research reveals that viruses are 10 times more successful if the infection started in the morning. The findings also show that a disrupted body clock caused by shift work or jet lag is more vulnerable.

In the study, mice were infected with influenza โ€“ one group in the morning and another later in the day. The group infected in the morning showed 10 times the viral levels of the others.

Study author Dr Rachel Edgar says the findings indicate that shift workers and those who travel to different time zones often should be candidates for receiving the flu vaccine. The researchers also suggest that staying indoors during the day in a pandemic might be the key to stopping the spread of infection.
