Take the lead with a novice boss

Working with a new executive takes some getting used to at the best of times, but landing a job with one who has never had a PA before can be a tricky situation. Even if you’ve been an assistant for years, your boss won’t know how to use your skills to his advantage. It’s up to you to take the lead and come up with the best way to work together effectively using these top tips.

Teach the art of delegation Start by showing your new boss what you do for other executives, or how you used to handle tasks in previous roles. Let him know what you’re capable of so you can decide together what he needs you to do.

Gain access immediately Let your executive know you’ll need access to his inbox and calendar. Be sure to ask how he would like you to manage his emails and schedule so there’s no chance of you stepping on his toes.

Set boundaries If your boss has never worked with a management assistant, then it’s important to set boundaries early in the relationship so you both know what to expect. Clarify which tasks you’re comfortable taking on and don’t be afraid to push back if you think your executive is overstepping the line.

Get to know your boss You and your manager need to be able to trust each other, which is often easier said than done. Spend some time building a rapport by finding common ground. Be friendly, honest and respectful from day one so he feels comfortable with you. Schedule one-on-one meetings to get to grips with your boss’s work style, such as his preferred method of communication.

Patience is a virtue There will always be an adjustment period when you start with a new boss. You both have to learn to work with each other, so be patient. There will be times when things don’t go smoothly, but it’s all part of building a working relationship.
