The three As of conflict negotiation

The office environment is the perfect breeding ground for conflict. Most employees will clash with a colleague at some point in their career, so it’s important to know how to find a resolution that ensures both sides of the argument are heard. Here are the three As of conflict negotiation, according to blogger Tim Schurrer.

1 Acknowledge
Listen to what’s being said and recognise the other person’s feelings. Repeat it back to the speaker if you’re unsure of their meaning.

2 Align
See the situation from the other person’s point of view. Recognise how it made him or her feel and sympathise with them.

3 Assure
Let the other person know that you have a solution to move forward. Communicate your plan, as this will ease their worries.
