Work fewer hours to be more productive

Research shows employees want to work more hours

The UK of late seems to have adopted the idea that working longer hours means getting more done. However, new research points to the contrary, according to the World Economic Forum.

Researchers at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have learned that working longer hours actually results in a reduction of output. The study revealed that the more hours worked, the lower the GDP created per hour.

This is in line with findings from the British Health of Munition Workers Committee, which undertook research to determine how to maximise the productivity of workers in plants. They discovered that employeesโ€™ output started to fall after the plantโ€™s optimal 48 hours per week.

While the ideal length of the work week depends on the industry and the person working, these results definitely make a case for working less to achieve more.
