4 Steps to Successful Start to A New Assistant Job

New beginnings are something most people strive for at this time of year. If you’re kicking 2023 off by taking an upwards career move – be that a new job or a promotion – then Sam Claisse, PA to Liz Taylor at the Taylor Lynn Corporation (TLC) knows how to get you started in your new assistant job on the right foot.

Sam’s top tips for successful start to a new Assistant job:

1. Do your research

First impressions are everything in a new job, so be prepared. Most senior executives allow just three months to gauge an employee’s worth. If you already know the business culture and your key responsibilities on day one, you’re way ahead of the crowd.

How the company represents itself on social media can reveal a lot about the business.

You can contact the HR department to request the company handbook or code of conduct – you’ll appear proactive and get a head start on what’s expected.

Take a trial run of your commute at the correct time of day to ensure you’re on time and ready to go on your first day.

2. Check your tech

If working from home, test out your connection and equipment.

Other ways to prepare include taking a trial run of software and connecting with new colleagues on LinkedIn. Research competitors for ideas to improve or what to avoid.

3. Find out the dress code

How you look can dictate how you feel. Don’t rush out and buy a new wardrobe unless you have the budget. Do know what’s expected. Turning up in trainers for a business wear dress code could raise a few eyebrows. Prepare an outfit that’s smart and comfortable.

4. Meet your manager

As a PA, the chemistry between you and your manager is so important. In fact, for Liz and I, it’s absolutely key. Ask for a brief meeting at a neutral setting ahead of starting the job. The purpose? To get to know them and find out the requirements of the role. Notice what drinks/food they order, where they suggest holding the meeting and how easy it is to schedule. All clues to help successfully navigate their diary management in the future.
