4 ways to make a career change without starting over

Making a career change without a pay cut is not impossible

Many people hop from job to job in search of better pay or a promotion, but there are others who wake up one day and realise theyโ€™re on the wrong career path entirely. Whether itโ€™s a change of industry or a completely different role youโ€™re after, thereโ€™s no reason making a move means you have to take a pay cut. Erica Gellerman, who consults female business owners, recently gave Forbes four tips to help workers make a career change without starting from the bottom.

1 Make yourself marketable
Before you get yourself out there itโ€™s important to take stock of your current skills and the ones youโ€™ll need in your new job. Find ways to learn what you can, such as training, networking, or taking on work experience in your own time. The extra effort will show on your CV and make you that much more employable.

2 Look for in-house opportunities
If itโ€™s simply a different type of role youโ€™re after, find out if thereโ€™s any scope to make the move within your company. Express your interest during a meeting with your boss and explain your reasons for wanting a career change. If your manager is truly supportive and youโ€™re a valued employee, he or she will help you transition rather than run the risk of losing you.

3 Focus on your strengths
Itโ€™s easy to get wrapped up in the skills and experience you lack, but employers like people who are positive about what they do have. Focus on your background and how your skills can translate to the new role. Selling yourself is all about telling your potential new boss why employing you benefits the company.

4 Donโ€™t be afraid to negotiate
Yes, you should keep your salary expectations at the back of your mind throughout the job search, but donโ€™t let that dictate which roles you apply for. Write an ace CV and give a killer interview to land a job offer, then turn your attention to negotiating your pay. A career change doesnโ€™t mean you have to take a pay cut โ€“ so long as you put forward a strong enough case to get what you want.
