How to remain relevant in the workplace as you age

With the number of over-65s still working in the UK having reached the one million mark for the first time ever, it looks like an increasing number of us will be clocking in for the foreseeable future. Here then are a few pointers to ensure that the baby boomer generation continues to make a meaningful contribution in the workplace.

Keep abreast of new technology With technology evolving at such a rapid pace it can be hard for older people to keep up, but it’s essential that you do in order to impress the boss and show colleagues that you’re not fazed by the latest computer programmes or digital innovations.

Get to know a wide circle of colleagues It’s important to try to get along with as many co-workers as you can and just because you’re over 50 doesn’t mean you should restrict yourself to people your own age. Make a conscious effort to become friendly with younger staff too, as it’s good to be able to keep them on side.

Be amenable to experiencing new activities We’ve all heard the phrase “get out of your comfort zone” and older workers should really take this to heart and open themselves up to new experiences. By doing so, they can keep their competitive edge and boost their skills set at the same time.
