Long commute affects productivity

If you find yourself resenting your daily slog into the office, take heart in the fact that you?re not alone. A recent study shows that the average UK worker spends more than 11 weeks a year commuting to and from their workplace.

The findings, which were compiled by space management software company Cloudbooking, utilises the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics, show that journey times are on the increase. In 2003, the average was 45 minutes, but the current number is 54 minutes, based on four weeks of holiday and a 37.5-hour working week.

Despite advancements in cloud computing and other technology that makes it easier for employees to work from home, 87% of the UK?s workforce carries out their duties at their company?s premises. Meanwhile, research by Stanford University in California shows that remote workers are 13% more productive and take fewer sick days than their commuting colleagues.
