Try perks in place of a pay rise

A new study by recruitment specialist Robert Half reveals that 67% of HR directors are more willing to negotiate salaries with job candidates compared to this time last year. However, if your company isn?t budging on a pay rise, try asking for perks that benefit your career and personal life instead.

Rather than a bigger pay cheque, negotiate a flexible work schedule that allows you to come in earlier so you can have more free time in the afternoon, or have longer hours Monday to Thursday so you can leave early on Friday. This will allow you to have a better work-life balance. Likewise, suggest that you telecommute one or two days a week, as this can save enough on your travel costs to give you a bit of extra spending money every month.

If it?s more free time you?re after, consider asking for additional paid time off. These days will be more valuable to you, but they shouldn?t cost your employer as much as a pay rise.

Look at ways of improving your time at the office. Could you use a new chair or a bigger monitor? Better equipment will help you be more efficient. If you?ve got your eye on an upcoming project, ask to be assigned to work on it. Boost your value to the company by requesting to attend training sessions ? this will also increase your chances of a pay rise in the future.
