Mocktail meetings are here to stay: Five reasons to switch to no-alcohol events

We all remember conferences that, at 5 pm, decamp to the bar for a post-event drink and lively conversation over the day’s activities. Not long after, a pre-dinner drinks reception follows, and then your choice of red or white wine with your meal. Not to mention the post-dinner cocktails at the bar!  These may have been the traits of a corporate event that were expected and had been in place for years, but they are now undergoing radical change. Many EAs, PAs and event planners  welcome the switch to no-alcohol events…

While the format and opportunity to connect with colleagues may stay the same, what’s in the glass at these gatherings has evolved. According to event organisers at one Stratford-upon-Avon hotel, a noticeable shift is underway. Increasingly, organisers are swapping fizz, wine and beer-filled receptions and open bars for something more contemporary and health-conscious – the mocktail meeting. And it’s led them to offer a new dry meeting package for corporate events that incorporates this latest trend.

Here, Clarion Hotel Charlecote Pheasant highlights how this growing trend is not just about cutting out alcohol; it’s about creating a more memorable and inclusive event experience.

“More and more we were being asked for more creative and imaginative alcohol-free options,” begins Amelia Reid, sales manager at the property. We decided to introduce a dedicated mocktail package for our meetings and have seen a sharp rise in bookings.

“Our events have been proving that alcohol-free doesn’t mean atmosphere-free. In fact, quite the opposite. With a growing range of premium non-alcoholic spirits and creative serves, mocktails are stepping confidently into the spotlight.”

Here are five reasons why mocktail meetings are fast becoming the go-to choice for PAs:

No-alcohol events mean clear heads and increased productivity

It’s hard to be focused and productive with a foggy head or worse, a hangover, making productivity one of the most compelling reasons to rethink the traditional drinks reception. Keeping attendees clear-headed has clear benefits for the company, particularly at a multi-day conference. When the drinks reception is a dry affair, delegates can be focused, with less risk of a sluggish start the following morning.

Tapping into the no-alcohol movement

The rise of the low and no-alcohol market is impossible to ignore. Across all of society, people are drinking less; alcohol is no longer seen as essential for fun or celebration

Around a quarter of the population (24%) now consider themselves to be sober or sober-curious. These changing attitudes are also reflected in industry trends, with demand for alcohol free options soaring by some 639%, and most bars, venues and hotels putting more thought and emphasis on their non-alcoholic drink options.

The upshot? Today’s professionals are more mindful of how they consume alcohol, with corporate event formats evolving to reflect that. Offering a well-curated mocktail menu is a modern, forward-thinking approach that resonates with a wide audience.

No-alcohol events feel inclusive and accessible for all

Mocktail meetings create a more inclusive environment. Whether it’s for health and wellness, cultural or personal reasons, not everyone enjoys drinking alcohol. Removing it from the meeting environment altogether ensures that no one feels awkward or pressured. Or worse, sidelined. Practically, too, alcohol-free meetings also work well. Guests can drive home afterwards without worrying about transport or accommodation, meaning companies don’t have to bear the additional costs.

Budget-friendly, but with all the impact

It’s not just health, safety and productivity that can all benefit from a mocktail meeting. There is a financial upside for PAs as well.

Mocktail and no-alcohol drink packages can be much more cost-effective than traditional bar options, helping you to keep events within budget. That doesn’t mean your event has to lose any impact. In fact, many PAs and organisers are using the savings to enhance the experience. Think mixologists creating bespoke signature drinks, dedicated mocktail stations complete with bar flair and live preparation or imaginative presentation with dry ice and added theatrics. Interactive touches can deliver the kind of “wow” moment and energetic entertainment that elevates an event and makes it memorable – without the booze.

A creative, flexible experience

A big misconception about mocktails is that they’re somehow a second choice to alcoholic counterparts. In reality, non-alcoholic cocktails are a high-quality and upscale option. The range of non-alcoholic spirits now widely available is growing by the day. The UK non-alcoholic spirits market is expected to reach USD 40.9 million by 2030! This means that mocktails can offer the same depth, balance and aesthetic appeal as traditional cocktails. From botanical blends, artisan spirits and premium brands to bold, fruity creations, they can be tailored to suit any theme or occasion. And with a little thought put into the presentation, mocktails can really be a first-class serve.

Finally…

The shift towards dry events and mocktail meetings reflects a broader change in meetings and events that many PAs and event planners are embracing. It’s one that prioritises wellbeing, incorporates different ways of thinking and the current trends, and redefines what a successful event looks like. And crucially, the takeaway here is that memorable corporate events don’t have to revolve around alcohol. The rising popularity of the mocktail meeting experience at the Clarion Hotel Charlecote Pheasant proves that.
