5 questions to ask yourself to find meaningful work

Research by Central YMCA shows employee happiness decreases in the workplace

Humans are always trying to define the meaning in everything they do, and thatโ€™s especially true of our jobs. Career coach Nancy Collamer recently wrote an article for Forbes in which she outlined five key questions to ask yourself to find meaningful work. Hereโ€™s a synopsis of her advice.

1 Which five words best describe you?
This may seem like a fun exercise, but itโ€™s actually quite difficult to narrow your essence down to just five key words. Doing so can help you understand the essentials that drive you.

2 What canโ€™t you stop yourself from doing?
Do you have a certain behaviour or a set of skills that you canโ€™t help doing or using? Sometimes even the things you do subconsciously can turn into a career opportunity.

3 What would you do if you knew you couldnโ€™t fail?
Fear of failure keeps most people from stepping out of their comfort zone and taking risks with their career. Imagine what you could accomplish without that fear and use that revelation to find meaningful work.

4 What can you do today to move yourself forward?
Making a career or job change is a big step and it can be daunting. Instead, focus on the small things you can do today to move yourself closer to your goal of finding more meaningful work.

5 What would you change if you only had five years to live?
Obviously itโ€™s not great to think about death, but putting yourself in the shoes of someone who needs to consider their legacy can help you understand whatโ€™s really important to you. And thatโ€™s what will help you define meaningful work in your own life.
