Helpful hints for job hunters over 50

Job hunting is being treated like booking a holiday

When you get to your 40s and 50s, itโ€™s likely you will have held a stable position at a company for years. But sometimes life throws you a curveball and you need to look for a new job. While youโ€™re highly employable and have all the experience in the world, the job market moves at such a fast pace to keep up with millennials that you need to adapt to get noticed. We did some research and pulled together a few top tips to help job hunters over 50 find the perfect role.

Remember that age doesnโ€™t matter
Age discrimination is illegal in the UK, so thereโ€™s no need to divulge your date of birth on your CV or job applications. Of course your employment history will give recruiters an idea of how old you are, but donโ€™t let that bother you. Embrace your experience and demonstrate how youโ€™ve kept up with skills development throughout your career.

Review your CV
Common practice with CVs has changed a lot over the years, so job hunters over 50 should do some research or ask for professional help to re-write their CV, especially if itโ€™s been a while since youโ€™ve had to update yours. Again, focus on your experience and show employers how much value you can add to their business with your skills.

Network
This goes for anyone of any age looking for a new job. So many positions are filled without listing them online these days. Take advantage of lifelong connections and let your friends know youโ€™re in the market for a new job. Get yourself out to industry networking events so you can introduce yourself to the right people โ€“ you never know who might be looking for a candidate like you.

Stay humble at interviews
Weโ€™ve said a few times now that you need to use your experience to your advantage, but donโ€™t let it go to your head. Remember that the people conducting interviews might be a lot younger than you; donโ€™t think that makes you better than them. Keep the attitude hidden and act as if itโ€™s your first job all over again.

Update your wardrobe
Obviously we know from meeting you at our events that youโ€™re all impeccably dressed all the time. Still, if you find yourself back on the job market, itโ€™s a good idea to assess your wardrobe and determine if it needs an update. Have a look at current work wear trends and try to work them into your own style. Don’t be afraid to add a splash of colour here and there.

Be picky but donโ€™t waste time
At this point in your life youโ€™ll have a clear idea of your perfect role, the salary you need to maintain your lifestyle and what kind of company you want to work for. As such, you can be choosy about which jobs you apply for, especially if youโ€™re still in work. However, donโ€™t waste too much time trying to attract the attention of single employers unless youโ€™re only making the move to work specifically for them. Itโ€™s never a good idea to put all your eggs in one basket โ€“ apply for several positions at a time if your serious about jumping ship.

Update your skills
Itโ€™s never too late to learn something new. Seek out development opportunities and donโ€™t stop brushing up on your existing skill set. Itโ€™s also a good idea to pass on your knowledge to your younger colleagues through mentoring programmes; employers love seeing candidates who arenโ€™t afraid to teach others.
