7 signs you’re approaching burnout at work

How to notice if you're approaching burnout

Stress is truly a silent killer. It builds up slowly until the pressure becomes too much for you to handle. However, you can stop it from getting that far if you pay attention to your body. Here are seven signs that you’re approaching burnout at work.

1 You’re cynical
If you find yourself getting sarcastic about things that happen at work or you only see the negative side of everything, chances are you’re on the verge of burnout.

2 You think about leaving
Too much stress can make you have serious thoughts about leaving your job or even running away altogether (how much does a bungalow in Belize cost?). You might also find excuses to avoid work as a way to cope with the pressure.

3 You make stupid mistakes
There are those really simple tasks you do every day, and you know exactly how to do them yet you start making mistakes. It’s hard to pay attention to detail when you’re close to burnout.

4 You’re exhausted
Is it getting harder to wake up in the morning? Do you find yourself sleeping in later and later on the weekends? Stress makes you feel tired no matter how much sleep you’ve had, so listen to what your body is telling you.

5 Nothing is ever good enough at work
Your boss is a bully, your colleagues are driving you up the wall and you’re two seconds from walking out the door for good. Burnout can cloud your judgement and make everything seem worse than it actually is, so take a step back and ask yourself if things are as bad as you think.

6 Self-doubt makes you question everything
You’re wondering if you’ve made the right career choice and doubting whether you’re really meant to be doing your job. But then you question whether leaving would solve the problem. Don’t let this classic sign of burnout slip past you.

7 You’re ill constantly
Stress weakens your immune system and causes a knock-on effect when it comes to your health. If you notice a constant headache, upset stomach, or sickness that just won’t go away (how long have you had that cough?) then it’s time to take a break.

If you think you’re on the verge of burnout, take stock of your situation and think about making positive changes – and it doesn’t have to be work-related; book yourself a relaxing spa trip, spend more time with your friends and family, or set yourself goals to shake things up at work. Monotony breeds contempt, so it’s important to find ways to get yourself out of a routine once in a while.
