4 types of people to avoid at work

How to say no at work

Office politics are never easy to navigate and sometimes itโ€™s hard to tell who you can trust at work. Luckily, business Professor Kimberly A Whitler recently wrote an article for Forbes in which she described the four types of people you need to avoid at the office.

1 Climbers โ€“ These people will stop at nothing to advance themselves. While they may seem like a team player on the outside, their discussions often contain the words โ€œIโ€, โ€œmeโ€ and โ€œmineโ€. Put your trust in people who speak about the team as a whole.

2 Hurdlers โ€“ Ever had a colleague put you in the line of fire in order to take a promotion you were eyeing? Thatโ€™s exactly what a hurdler does. Donโ€™t let them take your ideas or claim they did the majority of the work on a team project if itโ€™s not true.

3 Takers โ€“ Be wary of anyone who is constantly asking for help, advice and ideas but who rarely steps up to help others. Before you know it, theyโ€™ll be up for a promotion while youโ€™re still doing all the grunt work.

4 Box tickers โ€“ These are the ones who will do the bare minimum; in other words, that colleague who only does exactly what is asked and will rarely go above and beyond. While they get the job done, theyโ€™re not always very helpful. Be especially careful if you have to manage this person on a project.
