Gender roles on the way out, but still a long way to go

The gender pay gap is widening at management levels

The latest American Time Use Survey reveals that while traditional gender roles have changed dramatically, the gap between how men and women spend their day is still vastly different. Men work more hours than women, while women spend more time doing household chores.

The survey, which provides statistics to the US government, found that employed men work on average 42 minutes more per day than their female counterparts. This trend was reported among both part and full-time workers.

Half of the women surveyed said they clean or cook at home every day, while only 22% of men do the same – translating to 2.6 hours a day for women and 2.1 hours for men. They also reported spending an average of one hour a day providing childcare, compared to the 25 minutes spent by males on the same activity.

According to The Daily Mail, a study by the Australian Institute of Family Studies found a similar statistic, with mothers spending 24 hours a week on housework and chores.

Proving that traditional gender roles are on the way out, the survey reveals that the number of men who prepare food every day has increased by 8% since 2003, while the number of women doing household chores has decreased by 4%.
