Here’s what Brits do to wake up every morning

Sleepyย Britsย hitย theย alarm snooze button for at least 15 minutes each morning and functionย onย โ€˜autopilotโ€™ untilย they feel fully awake – half an hour after starting work

A studyย ofย 2,000ย adults foundย theย average alarm is set for 6.54am, beforeย they actually get outย ofย bed at 7.12am.

But itโ€™s another 29 minutes before people feel awake and ready to startย theย day โ€“ although men need an extra five minutes longer than women to get going (31 minutes compared to 26 minutes).

It also emergedย one in fiveย often arrive at work still feeling sleepy, with 17 per cent admittingย they arenโ€™t completely awake duringย theย commute and a third are functioningย onย autopilot.

As a result, those workersย spendย theย first 35 minutesย ofย theirย morning at work trying to fully wake up soย they can faceย theย day ahead.

But a quarterย ofย adults polled by supplement firm Healthspan claim to have whole days where it feels likeย they never really feel completely awake and alert.

Butย theย study found that not feeling properly awakeย hasย seen 36 per cent make a mistake at work, while 30 per cent have snapped at someone.

Others admitted it ledย them to eat unhealthy food (30 per cent), arrive late to work (18 per cent) or even have a road accident (five per cent).

It also emerged three in 10 believeย they are finding it harder to wake up inย theย mornings asย they get older, while 55 per cent struggle more inย theย winter than at any other timeย ofย theย year.

And nearly two fifthsย ofย those inย theย study claimedย theirย mood is lower inย theย winter, with experts believing some people are more predisposed to SAD.

Theย study also found that nearly two thirdsย ofย those polled believeย theirย bodyย hasย a natural inclination to sleep at a certain time.

Although 25 per cent thinkย theirย sleeping patternย hasย changed inย theย last six months as lifeย hasย started to return to normal post-lockdowns.

In a bid to feel more awake inย theย mornings, 36 per cent turn to a strong coffee and 24 per cent relyย onย a hot shower.

Stretching (22 per cent), a walk or exercise (16 per cent) and playing loud music (12 per cent) are also common tactics.

Theย study, carried out viaย OnePoll, also found 36 per centย ofย adultย considerย themselves to be a night owl, while 33 per cent thinkย they are early birds.
