59% of Britain’s working days lost to stress

Tap Warehouse have investigated Stressed Out Britain – uncovering the rising stress levels and revealing how it affects everyone from the NHS to the workplace.

Among the key findings of the report are:-

Patients Suffering from Stress Take Up 18% More Bed-Days Than Those in Labour

After analysing the past ten year’s worth of NHS hospital admissions for stress and anxiety, Tap Warehouse found that:  

• Over the past decade, stress-related hospital admissions have risen by 33%.
• In the past year (Apr 2018 – Mar 2019), patients suffering from stress accounted for 158,880 day-beds – which is 18% more than patients in long labour (133,775 day-beds), and 22% more than Alzheimer patients (130,198 days).

For A Quarter of the UK’s Workforce, Unemployment Would be Less Stressful Than Their Low-Paying Job

• Research reveals that chronic stress is distinctly higher for adults in low-paying jobs than those who are unemployed.
• With more than 8.8 million Brits in low-paying jobs, this means that almost a quarter (27%) of the UK’s workforce are vulnerable to stress-related health issues. 

In 2019, 59% of Britain’s Working Days Were Lost Due to Stress, Anxiety and/or Depression

• In the last year (Apr 2018 – Mar 2019), stress, anxiety and/or depression accounts for 59% of lost working days – totalling 12.8 million days.  
• This equates to an average of 21.2 days lost per person that took time off for stress, anxiety and/or depression.
• 44% of Brits claim that their ‘workload’ is the biggest cause of workplace stress.
