Tips to thrive when your boss doesn’t respect you

How to get over unfair treatment at work

Research shows that feeling valued is one of the most sought-after aspects of a job, yet 54% of people feel their managers do not respect them. Writing for the Harvard Business Review, management professor Christine Porath gives some top tips for keeping on your path to success when your boss doesn’t respect you.

Pursue development
Identify skills that you need to work on. Actively pursue opportunities to develop in those areas, whether it’s taking training courses or learning on the job. Work closely with a mentor so you have a guiding light and somebody who can praise you for your achievements where your boss falls short.

Manage your energy
Your personal health has a huge effect on how you respond to stress at work, so be sure to get plenty of sleep, eat well and get a bit of exercise. This can help you stay focused on your goals when your boss doesn’t respect you and keeps you from reacting harshly to negativity – particularly important if you don’t want to say something you’ll regret.

Build a sense of purpose
Create meaning in everything you do by shaping your day around your motives, strengths and passions. Map out what it is your role entails and slot regular tasks into place so you can discover which activities are the most important to achieving success.

Seek positive relationships
Make friends with colleagues you can trust at work and build upon positive relationships in your personal life. Research shows this has a big impact on your ability to thrive, especially if you receive a lot of negativity from your boss.

Seek success outside of work
Get involved in non-work activities and strive to thrive in those too. Building positive energy from success at things you enjoy doing is a great way to improve your emotional wellbeing. When you’re happy outside of work, it’s easier to cope when your boss doesn’t respect you.
