Top 5 bugbears about a bad boss

Top 5 bugbears about a bad boss

Numerous studies have alluded to the fact that poor management is one of the top reasons people decide to leave a job. But what are employees’ biggest bugbears when it comes to their bosses? Lifestyle site Cheat Sheet has investigated to find the five worst complaints about managers.

1 Poor communication skills
Communication from the boss is about more than explaining themselves properly and giving clear directions. Not recognising employee achievements and keeping them out of the loop on organisational changes are some of the biggest complaints from staff.

2 Favouritism
We all get a thrill from being the apple of our manager’s eye – the favourite child, if you will. But those on the other side feel left out and unappreciated; they find it difficult to accept that they’ve been passed up for opportunities because their colleague “knows somebody” or has won brownie points with the boss for unrelated reasons.

3 Lack of appreciation
The results of a survey released earlier this year reveal that only 16% of employees had heard a thank you from their boss, and a mere 32% feel appreciated at work. If employees don’t feel valued, they’re bound to look elsewhere for jobs.

4 Micromanagement
Trust is another key component to the boss-employee relationship, so if your executive micromanages your workload by constantly asking for updates and sending you “polite” reminders, your nerves will start to wear thin.

5 Overbearing
There’s something about power that tends to go to people’s heads. As a PA, you’ve probably encountered a boss with an overbearing personality, somebody who is mean and belittles the work you do. Nobody likes a bully. Check out these tips for dealing with an office bully.
